Dude are you even fucking kidding me?

It's so ridiculous that the two sane parts of that platform actually startled me.

Seriously. What. The. Fuck.

No, they are not fucking kidding you, they really are that fucking scary, and sometimes I hate being a Texan. I really miss Molly Ivins and Ann Richards.

I'm also a big fan of how they want to put and end to the Endangered Species Act and no-fault divorces.

Like, dude, in 2004, I thought I hated being from Ohio. I can't imagine trying to deal with Republicans in Texas.. I don't know how you stay sane.

# Allowing attorneys who obtain their law degree through learning by electronic means or U.S. mail to take the Texas Bar Exam.
# Requiring full disclosure of the amounts and sources of any campaign contributions to political candidates, whether by individuals, political action committees, or other entities.
# Opposing human trafficking in any form.

...These are somewhat sane ideas. I mean, I'm a little confused about the online one- but an accredited online university? Sure, whatever. That's cool. Also? Human trafficking is probably no good? I mean if that means transporting someone against their will. Sounds bad.

The rest of it? I'm so glad I'm too inebriated from pride-related festivities to really let any of that sink in.

Ah, look! A third sane idea! I must have missed it the first time from all the mind-numbing WTFery of the rest of it.

Yeah, like Lorraine said, this is the sort of shit that requires a drink. I actually read the whole 25 page document.

Urgh.

This is creepy and disturbing.

Most of it isn't. That's the fun of political campaigning--campaign promises don't have to be constitutional. One of the many reasons I'm not a fan of politics: there are at least some people who've signed on to that document that darn well know there's no way those things will happen, yet they pander to the angry and uneducated.

Yep, they're serious, that is their for-serious platform for the year. Any of that shit actually being legal? Who cares! Remember that talk about how Bush did lots of illegal things and nobody seemed to notice?

Yes, it's definitely creepy and disturbing. Especially the part in the actual document that flat-out lists homosexuals next to child molestors as shouldn't ever be allowed to have custody of children.

Aren't American polictics awesome?

So, when my sister takes over the world as an evil dictator, I'm giving you a heads-up to GTFO, because Texas is on her to-nuke list.

Also. If you have the stomach, read the whole document that's linked there. It took a while, but it's a morbidly fascinating read. I'm kind of glad I read it late while I was too tired to work up a proper fear or rage. I was just... dazed.

Yes, but I LIVE here. However, we also have Henry Cuellar, Lloyd Doggett, Rueben Hinojosa, Chet Edwards, Charlie Gonzalez, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Bill White and the rest of the Texas Democrats who are as a whole, quite nice and not crazy. They don't have their 2010 Platform up, but here's the 2008 platform: Texas 2008 Democratic Party Platform. See, not all Texans are nut jobs.

These are the days when I'm SO happy we have a national constitution. Most of that is unconstitutional. Not that that won't stop some folks from trying to pass legislation anyway, but at least it won't make it very far, or if it does, won't last very long before being struck down. (I mean, really, anti-Census? That one is *literally* written in the Constitution--as in the word "census" is there. No interpretation required.)

I think the thing that bothers me most is that there are enough people with that much hate and fear in their hearts that this could be the platform of a mainstream political party.

Date: 2010-06-27 03:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] safenthecity.livejournal.com
But oh, they aren't anti-Census, they're anti-the Census asking anything but how many people live there. Because figuring out racial or gender statistics just leads to badness, doncha know?

I think the thing that bothers me most is that there are enough people with that much hate and fear in their hearts that this could be the platform of a mainstream political party.

Word. And that this is the party that wins in one of the biggest states in the nation. How is that possible?

Actually, the Census issue has some traction, because all the constitution does require is a national decennial to apportion representation. It says nothing at all about how to count citizens and the mid-decade statistical sampling (which is what they actually oppose) impacts the flow of billions of federal dollars. The dumbassness of this is that it actually hurts Texas overall, because it reduces our federal dollars, but since most of the population gain is in poor urban areas and along the borders (the blue parts of Texas) the Republicans are cool with that, because it helps them stay in power in Texas. If there are two issues that could actually change Texas to a more 'purple' state it's 1) getting a census that counts our poor urban population more accurately (my area of Texas which voted strongly Democrat would pick up at least one additional U.S. Representative, and probably two) and 2) having a non-political redistricting process - Texas districts are so f'g gerrymandered that I tend to nearly stroke out at looking at them - after the last one the Reub's picked up 5 seats in the house.

P.S. it's really scary that a major party could have a platform that appeals to the lowest, most frightened dinosaurs in the pack.

Requiring a sonogram be performed and offered as part of the consent process to each mother seeking an elective abortion.

yeah, that's not emotionally manipulative AT ALL. God, can you imagine some poor girl trying to get an abortion because she was raped and being made to confront that trauma on yet another level?

I'm okay with people having different opinions than me and all that jazz, but when it comes to basic human rights and people start treating immigrants, GLBT people, or victims like animals...it's unbelievable.

One that didn't get mentioned on that site is rescinding no fault divorce laws. Which is a blatant attempt to try to keep people married....return to the 50's in essence.

We support legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple You've got to be kidding

I know, right? I kind of actually died a little inside when that list first came out. Let's just give them back to Mexico as a gift. We don't need their asshattery.

On a side note, this blatant homophobia is why - unless we're going to Disney World or on a cruise - Chloe and I do not travel further south than Virgina. People with this mindset are dangerous. :( It must be hard on them to be so hateful. I bet the people who buy into this shit don't even realize how ugly they are.

And the sane parts? Yeah, they startled me too.

I don't blame you. My dad lives in Georgia now, so that makes visiting him interesting.

Ditto what Kappa said about constitutional.

Although I find it hard to argue with this one:

Opposing human trafficking in any form.

I wish we had a more than two party system. ::sigh:: There are things I like about the Republicans, and things I like about the Democrats. But voting Libertarian (which is really what I am, in an ideal world- even that isn't perfect) often feels like I'm throwing my vote away :P
